How Sears Range, Stove, Ovens Work
Sears combination ranges have two different components - the surface burners and an oven. This is how Sears combination ovens work:
Control Panel

Oven Control Board
There are several Sears oven and stove combinations but all control panels will have some of the similar components:
- The thermostat that regulates temperature of the oven works in conjunction with a long copper tube. This tube relays the information back to the thermostat by either heating or cooling. There is another type of thermostat in the oven, an electronic or mechanical model. This mechanical model has a probe attached to a small circuit board behind the stove knob. When the signals are received from the probe to this knob, the thermostat knows to adjust the temperature of the stove.
- Sears stoves have two kinds of clocks, a mechanical and an electronic one. There are usually three dials on a mechanical clock - start dial, stop dial, and the clock dial. Start and stop dials are used for timing your cooking and for selections for self-cleaning the oven. The electronic clocks are not fixable and need to be replaced when they stop working.
- Many ranges have electronic keypads which allow for setting the oven, broiler, timed bake, and self-cleaning times and temperatures. The electronic keypads cannot be repaired and need to be replaced when they fail.
- Every electric and gas range has at least one control switch for the stove or the broiler. For some ranges this is the same switch as the thermostat, while in others it is separate. The separate switch operates in conjunction with the thermostat. A user can set the thermostat to desired temperature and then sets the selector switch to allow Bake, Broil, Timed Bake, etc.
- The light switch is usually located in the door frame of the stove, although some units have a light above the oven; this light is operated by a switch located in the control panel.
- The surface burner switches operate the same way as regular dimmer switches. By regulating the amount of electricity flowing from the switch to the burner, they allow adjustment of temperature settings.
- Self-cleaning buttons and switches in ovens are there frequently in addition to the clock controls for the self-cleaning feature. They often have a door lock button or a separate switch to toggle between self-clean and normal bake.
- By using a fan to circulate air and provide even temperatures throughout, convection ovens allow even cooking of food. You can enable or disable the convection cooking option by using a switch on the control panel.
Cook top
- Electric ovens often have coils on top of the unit for the cook top. A wire inside the coils heats up when the electricity is applied and this causes the coils to glow. Burners called "euro burners" do not glow, although they get just as hot. Euro burners are smooth and solid, and approximately six to eight inches in diameter. They have no moving parts and have an internal coil in the center. "Smooth top" burners work the same way as the coil type, but are concealed under the surface.
- Gas range top burners use a similar system; there is a control knob for each burner and each is attached to a small valve that is mounted to the main gas line. When you turn the knob on, the gas flows through the valve into a "venturi" tube. This tube creates the proper mix for combustion by combining the gas with proper amount of air. The pilot light or the igniter lights this mixture when it flows into the burner. , The size of the flame is regulated by the adjustment if the burner control knob which also restricts the amount of gas flowing through the valve.
Area Beneath the Cook top
- Most electric cook tops with coil burners allow the whole cook top to be raised for cleaning or servicing. Model number and serial number tags are also often located beneath the cook top
- Many gas cook tops that have non-sealed gas burners also allow the the cook top to be raised when cleaned or serviced. The individual gas burner valves and ignition components may be located there as well; also model number and serial number tags.
Area Behind the Broiler Drawer
On most gas stoves the safety valve, spark igniter, fuse, and other components are located behind the broiler drawer.
Back of the Unit
Much of the wiring (for both electric and gas ovens) is located in the back of the unit. The steel panels that cover the wiring are there to protect the user from danger and the wiring from damage. Other components - such as relays, self-cleaning switches, transformers, and terminal blocks - are also located behind the protective back panels.
Helpful Maintenance Tips for Sears Range, Stove, Ovens
- Most control panels for these appliances are made of glass and/or painted metal. It is best to use non-abrasive cleaners on these surfaces.
Note: It is better not to spray cleaners directly onto the control panel but to place some cleaner on a soft, damp rag, and then wipe the surface.
- It is very important that cook-tops made of porcelain are cleaned with non-abrasive cleansers. RepairClinic.com provides all the cleansers and accessories you need for all your cooking appliances.
- Burner drip pans or bowls need to be replaced every couple of years. They are located beneath the grates on a gas range and beneath the heating element on an electric stove. It is usually very difficult to clean the drip pans completely once they are stained or burnt. Dirty and burnt drip pans can frequently affect the stove's cooking efficiency.
- Knob cleaning and care is also important. It is safe to clean the knobs with a a bit of dish detergent and a damp rag. If the numbers or lettering have worn away, the knobs can be replaced.
- Although Light bulbs are easy to replace, you may need to remove the glass covering or dome to reach it. Most interior ovens use a universal 40 watt appliance bulb.
- For the self-cleaning feature it is best to consult your owner's manual for instructions on how to use it. The self-cleaning works by heating the interior of the oven to a temperature so hot that it incinerates the residue of anything left in the oven. It is not a good idea to clean the interior of a self-cleaning oven with a spray cleaner, but you should refer to the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer if you have questions. To clean a non-self-cleaning oven, use one of the many oven cleaners available at various stores. RepairClinic.com has a wide selection of cleaning products for your oven.
- Burner Elements, as well as heating elements inside of them, will burn out eventually. When this happens you sometimes see the coils burning, blistering and bubbling. Once your heating element burns out, you need to replace it as they can't be repaired. Our experts recommend changing the infinite switch that controls the burners at the same time you change the burner elements. You can find all replacement parts for your oven, stove or range at RepairClinic.com.
